Exploring Lake Whatcom’s Water Quality
Project by Drew Hedlund, Emily Davis & Ben Larson
Lake Whatcom serves as a primary water source for the City of Bellingham, Geneva neighborhood and Sudden Valley. Due in part to previous industrial usage, housing developments and high levels of phosphorus, the water quality of Lake Whatcom has greatly diminished over a century. However, since 1992, Whatcom County, the City of Bellingham, Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District and the Department of Ecology have joined forces to form and implement a plan to protect the lake. Check out this video to learn more about the status of Lake Whatcom and what the four agencies are doing to restore the lake and make it a valuable resource for people and animals.
Special thanks to the following people who participated in this video: Justin Clary, Whatcom Water and Sewer District; James Kardouni, Department of Ecology; Gary Stokya, Whatcom County Public Works; Renee LaCroix, City of Bellingham
