Loose Ends: The Reveille Island Ghost Story

While on the hunt for Lake Whatcom’s deepest secrets and mysteries, the discovery of Reveille Island’s haunted past led us down a path in search of concrete answers. After weeks of investigating, we merely uncovered more conflicting stories with seemingly no clarity. While unsuccessful in the original mission, the research offered insight into the human psyche and the draw of disturbing legends.

Abandoned Cemetery at Lake Whatcom

Kolby LaBree, local history buff and operator of The Good Time Girls, explains the mystery of the old Buchanan Cemetery in Agate Bay

One of the mini mysteries we investigated was the supposed abandoned cemetery or Buchanan Cemetery. The property was owned by Joseph Buchanan in the 1890s and the cemetery began with him burying his son on the property. Bodies remain in the ground on what is now private property.

Blue Canyon Catastrophe

On April 9, 1895, a calamitous explosion was triggered in the Blue Canyon Mine, the aftereffects of which were deeply felt in the Bellingham community. The cause of the blast is unclear to this day.

Many citizens of Bellingham are unaware of the forgotten amusement park the city had from over a century ago. While it enjoyed some short-term success, it became difficult to sustain due to various factors outside of the owner’s control. The official closure of the park remains a mystery, but there are a few plausible explanations explored by locals.
